How to Handle a Tire Blowout

The best way to handle a tire blowout is to prevent one from happening in the first place. Tires are one of the most important safety features on your car and because they sustain regular abuse by the road it's important to take care of them. But, sometimes blowouts happen and you need to know what to do in the event that it happens to you. Here are some tips that will keep you safe:

  • Keep a tight grip on the steering wheel at the first sign of trouble.
  • Come to a slow, gradual stop. Don't slam on the brakes.
  • Steer your vehicle in a straight path. Trying to turn could result in a spinout.
  • When it is safe, pull over onto the shoulder. Don't forget to turn your hazard lights on while you wait for help. If you plan on changing the tire yourself, place reflective triangles around your vehicle to alert other drivers.
